Real Estate Sales is a Marathon, Not a Sprint

Is this business a marathon or a sprint?

I hope your answer is that it’s a marathon… But I want to share a fact that blew me away. This isn’t a fact from business, but it is so true when tied to business.

The world record for the fastest marathon is 2 hours and 35 seconds. 26.2 miles in 2 hours. That means the runner was at an average pace of 4:36 per mile.

That is an AVERAGE of 13 miles per hour.

I don’t know if you’ve ever been on a treadmill, but 13 miles per hour is a sprint.

How does this tie to real estate?

You’re running your marathon, and the person beside you might be running theirs faster than your sprint.

I talked to two of the top individual agents in our brokerage, and they had only two things in common. Everything else about their businesses was different. The two things they had in common were

  1. They dominated in a small geographic area
  2. They talk on the phone for 6,000+ minutes per month

Number one doesn’t matter to you and me, but number two absolutely does. It’s easy to look at the #1 agent in a marketplace and makeup reasons why they’re successful.

6,000 minutes of phone time is 100 hours per month. ON THE PHONE. Talking to other people. That is more time than most agents work in a month (actual work). The reality is they’re just doing way more than most agents.

One thing I love about this business is that you can get way ahead of your competition in a rather short amount of time.

Focus on consistency.

Learn from those ahead of you.

Do the basics at a high level.

Do the work.

Those who choose to raise their standards will outpace their competition.

I hope this gave you the kick that it gave me!
