San Juan Capistrano is a medium-sized city located in beautiful Orange County, California. It is approximately the 225th largest community in the state and has four main neighborhoods. It features a council-manager form of city government and has the city motto “Preserving The Past To Enhance The Future”. The city spans 14.43 square miles of primarily land area. The 2018 estimated population was around 36,013 and the estimated population density is around 2,550 people per square mile. Over 37.5% of adults in the community have four-year degrees or more, well above the national educational average for U.S. communities. It is a wonderfully diverse city in terms of race, ethnicity, and any other label you choose to explore. The three largest ethnic/racial groups are European Caucasians, Asians, and Hispanics. Common ancestries among residents are German, English, Irish, Italian, and others. Over 20% of the city’s population was born outside of the U.S. borders. Despite all the diversity, English remains the #1 language in the city, followed by Spanish and Chinese.
It is an upper-middle income community compared to state economic standards and wealthy compared to national economic standards. The city has a mixed workforce of white, blue, and no-collar workers. The 2017, estimated median household income was $86, 090 and the per capita income was approximately $45,370. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value in the city was $695,386 the mean price on all housing units was $908,090 and the median gross rent was $1,989 per month. According to the 2018, Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for San Juan Capistrano, the top five employers in the city was the Capistrano Unified School District, St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, Costco, Brookdale San Juan Capistrano, and JSerra Catholic High School.
The modern history of the area began in 1776 when the Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded to try and convert the native Acjachamen tribes. The city’s oldest neighborhood is Los Rios which is home to the city’s oldest building still in use today, the Serra Chapel in the historic mission. The city is known for its cliff swallows, these protected birds leave for migration in October every year and return in the spring. Their return in March inspires a Swallows’ Day Parade and celebration that has been happening annually for more than 80 years.
The public education for the youth of the city is primarily provided by the schools of the Capistrano Unified School District. There are also a number of wonderful private schools, non-secular schools. Public transportation is provided by the Orange County Transportation Authority and commuter train services by Amtrak and Metrolink.
